Nyash! Afrobeat Collective

After returning from Indonesia to Canberra in 2012 I decided that Canberra needed to have an afrobeat band. I conspired with good friends Simon Milman and Sophie Chapman and we started jamming. At the beginning we were just a band that played the songs of afrobeat legend Fela Kuti. As the band developed we started playing some of our own tunes and started branching out to Ska and some Ethio-jazz. As a 10 piece band, we went through what seemed like most of Canberra’s musos. I think we went through 6 different guitarists, 2 drummers, 3 trombonists, 2 sax players and 1 trumpet player but managed to retain myself, Simon and Raf Florez on percussion as the original crew. Here is our debut release, our self titled EP with tracks by yours truly and Simon. For anyone who is a little confused about the meaning of Nyash, The Urban Dictionary offers a worthy explanation.
