Nicholas Combe Nonet
The Nicholas Combe Nonet is now available.
This album is a project I have been working on since 2008. At the time I was the featured artist in the ANU Recording Ensemble, which was a jazz ensemble dedicated to playing new work by students. I was studying composition with the wonderfully eccentric Miroslav Bukovsky. The selection of songs on the album span from 2008 to 2015. The musicians on the album are some of Canberra’s finest Jazz musicians who I have had the pleasure of working with in Canberra, and who all studied at the ANU at one point. The music is inspired by Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Trygve Seim, Hanne Hukkleberg, T.S. Eliot, Tom Waits and The Skatalites. The album title, Once Is Enough, draws inspiration from a work of T.S. Eliot entitled Fragment Of An Agon. It also refers to the fact that this ensemble is a one off thing. Now that I have recorded and released these songs I can finally move on! These songs have been hanging over me for years. So have a listen as you probably won’t hear me play in an ensemble like this again for sometime. (Also once is enough for jumping into a bathtub filled with carrots)
Here is a video of the Nonet Live in Concert in 2015. This is the version of Love Is A Dog From Hell that made it onto the album
